Sustainable Transformation of a Historic Togus Pond Cabin

Togus Pond- Augusta– Transforming a historic log cabin into a comfortable, energy-efficient lakeside home required balancing preservation, sustainability, and the constraints of lakefront development.

Ecological Instincts developed 3D renderings that translated the owners’ ideas into a clear visual plan for the renovation. Because of the lakefront location and regulatory constraints, the design required careful planning to increase livable space without expanding the building footprint or exceeding City of Augusta height requirements.

The renovation was designed to “build around” the original log cabin structure while upgrading the home from seasonal use to a comfortable four-season residence. Key design goals included reconfiguring the layout to create a larger kitchen and bath, incorporating existing furnishings, and selecting environmentally responsible materials that support indoor air quality and family health.

The project was brought to life through collaboration with several skilled contractors, including The Breathable Home, who designed the home’s ventilation, heat pump, and insulation systems, and LP Homes and Home Improvements, the project’s general contractor.

The result is a thoughtful transformation that preserves the history of the cabin while creating a comfortable, efficient lakeside home designed for long-term living.
